Frequently Asked Questions
You may have some questions - we get it! Here you can find many frequently asked questions that will help you plan your dance classes with us. If you want specific information about a specific class style or the instructor, we'd recommend looking at our class list or about our team instead.
Questions
Q: How old must you be to take a drop-in class at Barrio? A: Barrio Dance drop-in classes are designed for older teens and adults. Dancers ages 13+ can participate! Just keep in mind, content and music choice is not tailored for youth. For heels classes, dancers must be 16+.
Q: Do you have youth classes? A: Yes, our training program, Lil BD Factory is for ages 5-13, and takes place through intensives and 5-10 week programs throughout the year. Check out our 'Youth Classes' page for more information.
Q: Does each class have new choreography each week? A: Not necessarily. Instructors have creative and educational agency to teach dance skills and combos within their respective styles. Often instructors will teach the same piece of choreography or patterns more than once. We believe there is no 'final step' of anyone's dance journey, so although our classes revolve around choreography, there are many skills to be learned through learning the same combination more than once. Repetition is a tool for improving movement and building technical and performance skills - something we are passionate about at Barrio!
Q: How do I know which level to sign up for? A: If you've never danced or taken a dance class before, we'd recommend Intro to Dance. If you're new to dance, but have some experience (say, you danced in high school, but it's been a while, or you're new but feel you have natural rhythm) we'd recommend a Beginner class. If you're an experienced dancer, but new to a specific style, we'd also recommend Beginner level. Intermediate classes are designed for those with ample dance experience in that specific style. We only recommend Intermediate/Advanced if you're well-experienced, have tried the Intermediate level classes, or are looking to really push yourself!
Q: Are classes filmed? A: Downtown classes are almost always filmed. Verona classes are filmed on occasion. Filming classes is a tool for practice, watching your progress, and for fun memories! Many dancers love to have footage of them dancing to share online or with friends or families. At the end of class, being in the filmed groups is optional, so if you'd like to sit out of the filmed rounds, you can let the instructor know.
Q: How do I get into the building? A: The entrance for our studio is on North Livingston St. It is on the SW side of the Galaxie building, around the corner of Festival Foods, and across the street from Salvatore's Pizza. Use the 'Barrio Dance' buzzer and the front desk staff can open the door for you.
